All NSU art degree programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD), the nation’s pre-eminent accrediting body for art and design. Degree programs are for students who, 1) are interested in art as a profession; 2) wish to become K-12 art teachers; 3) want to do creative explorations in art and design; and 4) want to develop an understanding and appreciation of art.

The Art Department at Northern offers a 120 credit hour Bachelor of Arts degree program with specializations in Fine Arts and Graphic Design, and a 128 credit hour Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Art Education. Professors and staff work closely with students to help students achieve their educational and career goals and enforce an open door “one-on-one” policy with all students.

Students will find recently renovated and modernized, spacious studios and labs to explore art education, art history, graphic design, digital design, drawing 2D and 3D design, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking and fiber arts.

The large 2D studio space features natural light, hardwood floors and eight studio spaces for junior and senior art students. There is a comfortable student lounge, classrooms for design, drawing, and painting, and a modern film-based photo darkroom. There are facilities for ceramics, printmaking and sculpture. The ceramics area features a generous work area with three electric and two gas kilns.

Northern has five art galleries to provide students with ample opportunities to exhibit their own and view artwork created by professional artists.

Art scholarships are available to bot new and continuing students. Applicants must submit up to ten (10) original artworks, either high-quality digital images, or artworks. Please submit high school transcripts, or current college level transcripts, ACT scores and a letter of recommendation.

All art majors must earn a minimum grade of “C” in all required major courses (including art electives). Those students who earn a “D” (or lower) in a required major course (including art electives) must repeat the course. No art major (BA/BSEd) will graduate if their GPA within the major is lower than a “C” average (2.0).
