Program Overiew:
The Master of Music Education program at Northern State University is designed for practicing K-12 music educators who seek to advance their knowledge and skills in teaching, performance, and leadership within school music programs. It prepares music teachers to be effective leaders and practitioners by integrating current research, innovative pedagogy, and advanced musicianship. The program is offered fully online, with a required one-week summer residency on campus each summer term. This program does not lead to teacher certification. The NSU Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students will demonstrate advanced competencies in music education and pedagogy.
- Students will gain knowledge and skills in performance, conducting, music history, and music theory analysis.
- Students will develop graduate-level perspectives on contemporary issues and problems in music education, including global music perspectives.
- Students will use analytical, technical, and critical thinking skills to anticipate, identify, analyze, and solve problems as they specifically apply to music education.

Final Culminating Experience:
- Completion of a program reflection paper
- Assembly of an online portfolio that showcases completed work from each course
