Certificate Overview:

Northern State University’s online Graduate Certificate in English as a New Language (ENL) is designed to enhance the credentials and marketability of current graduate students as well as educators who already hold a bachelor’s degree and teaching certification. This certificate provides coursework aligned with South Dakota Department of Education requirements for obtaining the ENL endorsement but does not confer teacher licensure or certification on its own. It enables certified teachers to become ESL educators or to refine their skills to better serve English learners in K-12 classrooms.

The program requires more than 12 graduate credits, including courses in educational assessment, teaching methods for English learners, curriculum and instruction for language acquisition, literacy development, and child and adolescent development. This stackable credential’s credits can be applied toward Northern’s M.S.Ed. in Teaching and Learning.
