Sports Administration and Leadership (MS) - Accelerated

ABOUT ACCELERATED PROGRAMS

Current NSU Students can earn their undergraduate degree and master’s degree in 5 years. As an undergraduate student, students can enroll in 500 level courses instead of 400 level courses. These higher-level courses will count toward both their undergraduate and master’s degrees per approval by the graduate studies office. Then, during their fifth academic year, students will continue and complete their master’s degree program as normal.

Admission Requirements:

NSU students should submit their application in the term before they plan to begin the program

  1. Completed Graduate Studies Application
  2. $36.00 (non-refundable) application fee
  3. Minimum 2.75 GPA
  4. Complete at least 90 undergraduate credits (prior to enrollment term)
  5. Two letters of Recommendations (If GPA is 3.0 or above, letters of recommendations are not required)

Program Overview:

The Master of Science in Sports Administration and Leadership at Northern State University is designed for aspiring athletic directors, sports managers, coaches, and leaders aiming to advance their careers within collegiate, professional, and community sports organizations. It develops professionals capable of guiding programs, teams, and operations by blending theory with practical application in leadership, sport operations, and organizational strategy.

Sports Management Specialization

This track delivers a strong base in organizational strategy, sport operations, and the business and legal facets of athletics. Emphasis is placed on sports psychology, communication, leadership development, as well as real-world experiences through site visits, team-based projects, and assistantships.

Coaching & Leadership Specialization

Focused on those passionate about coaching and athlete development, this track mixes theory and practice in coaching methods, team dynamics, and sports psychology. It emphasizes cultivating leadership, decision-making, communication, and mentorship skills essential for successful coaching roles at various competition levels

  • Demonstrate effective leadership in sports organizations, including skills in communication, decision-making, and team dynamics.
  • Apply principles of sports management to real-world scenarios, encompassing areas such as facility management, event planning, and marketing.
  • Analyze and address ethical and legal issues in sports settings, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for sports programs, aligning with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Evaluate and enhance performance through understanding of sports psychology, coaching techniques, and athlete development.
  • Utilize technology and data analytics to inform decision-making and improve operational efficiency in sports organizations.
  • Foster inclusive and diverse environments, promoting equity and accessibility within sports programs and activities.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, staying current with trends and innovations in the sports industry.

Coursework Required:


Final Culminating Experience:


  • Completion of a literature review paper and an oral presentation of students’ capstone project.
