MUS 333  -  History of Music II (500-1650)

This course is an in-depth exploration of the literature, history, and development of Western art music from its monophonic and polyphonic beginnings in the church of the Middle Ages beginning around 500 CE. The course will follow the development of notation, genres, and national styles that emerge through the Middle Ages (up to 1400), continue through High Renaissance (1600), and then trace the emerging trends in the Baroque era up to 1650. Continuing with vocal music until 1650. The objective of the course is to illustrate the music of these eras through composers, individual works, and score that typify the various forms and styles. Outside listening, reading, and musical analysis will supplement lectures. The ability to read musical notation is assumed for all students taking this class. 2 credits
