Student Success offers a variety of support services available to all NSU students free of charge.

Tutoring is offered in Dacotah Hall 101. Math tutoring is available for math and statistics courses, and supports science classes such as chemistry and physics as well. Reading assistance is offered for all disciplines to teach comprehension and strategies for managing large amounts of reading. Writing support is available for all types of writing assignments from essays and research papers to lab reports, personal statements, and correspondence.

Tutoring in other subject areas is available upon request.

Supplemental Instruction is a specialized form of academic support that is available for certain general education courses. Supplemental instruction makes use of learning teams to assist groups of students.

Academic advising is a key component of student success. Advisors are available to assist students with choosing a major, selecting classes, and navigating degree requirements. Advisors are based in multiple locations throughout the campus.

TRiO Student Support Services is a federally-funded grant program to assist first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities. Services include intensive advising, financial assistance, academic counseling, career exploration, and cultural events. Student Support Services is located in Dakotah Hall 101.

TRiO Upward Bound is a federally-funded program to assist first-generation and low-income high school students prepare for college. Intensive instruction, advising, and assistance with college applications and FAFSA are characteristics of Upward Bound. Upward Bound is located in Spafford Hall 106.

The American Indian Circle Program provides cultural programming and academic support to Northern’s Native students. Advising services and academic counseling are available in Dakotah Hall 108.

Career services are available at the Career Center, located in the Student Center 207. Resources to assist students in selecting a major/career field, graduate or professional school planning, occupational research, professional development, and employment assistance are all available to NSU students at no cost. Students can also get assistance with résumés and cover letters, personal statements, and interview skills.

Career Services maintains WolfWork, an online platform that provides employment resources to students, alumni, and recruiters alike. Part-time local jobs, including federal Work Study, are posted on WolfWork, as well as full-time professional positions and internships related to NSU fields of study. Staff also publish campus-recruiting events, including regular job fairs, and other career development activities on site.

Disability Services provides support and advocacy for students with disabilities, and is committed to a program of accessibility. A wide range of services are provided for students with learning disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, traumatic brain injuries, mobility issues, and other disabilities. Disability Services is located in the Student Center 240.

Testing Services provides students with proctoring services, placement testing, and CLEP (College Level Examination Program) testing. There is no charge for NSU students to use proctoring services. Testing Services is located in Williams Library 154A.
