Leadership and Administration (MSEd)

Location(s): Northern State University Campus, Online, Huron Community Campus



Admission Requirements:

  1. Completed Graduate Studies Application
  2. $35.00 (non-refundable) application fee
  3. Two letters of Recommendation
    • One letter verifying at least three years of teaching experience
  4. Official undergraduate transcript showing your degree awarded
    • 2.75 GPA from an accredited institution

 

The school administration program prepares school service personnel for leadership roles in PK-12 school administration. Specialized courses foster development of the analytic and scientific inquiry skills needed by school administrators- including management, public relations, curriculum development and supervision.

Courses provide the background for certification in a wide range of administrative positions. Admission to the leadership and administration program requires three years of full-time PK-12 teaching experience in an accredited school. Three years of verified teaching experience is required for licensure in South Dakota.

Career directions: public and private school administration, graduate study.

Educational Prerequisites: Three years full-time PK-12 teaching experience.

Teacher Education Information (Graduate - MSEd Leadership & Administration)


The Millicent Atkins School of Education offers a master’s degree in Leadership and Administration.  This program includes the Principal Preparation Program which leads to certification for K-12 Building Principal in South Dakota.  The program prepares educators for leadership roles in K-12 school administration with specialized coursework that fosters development of the analytic and scientific inquiry skills needed by school administrators including management, public relations, instructional leadership, curriculum development, and school law.

The MSEd in Leadership and Administration complies with certification requirements and has been approved by the SD Department of Education.  Students will complete content and pedagogy examinations at the achievement level set by the SD Department of Education.  Admission to the leadership and administration program requires verification of three years of full-time K-12 teaching experience in an accredited school which is required for licensure in South Dakota.

Northern State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and the Teacher Education Program in the Millicent Atkins School of Education is accredited by CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation).
