General Studies (BGS)

In addition to being offered on Northern State University’s main campus (Aberdeen, SD), this major is also offered at Capital University Center (Pierre, SD), University Center - Rapid City, University Center - Sioux Falls and Online.

Program Requirements

Select from

Humanities and Fine Arts

(12-14 credits, 4 courses from at least 3 categories)

Artistic Expression

Up to 3 credits

Language and Literature

Social Connections

Mathematics (3-5 credits, 1 course)

Natural Sciences (6-8 credits, 2 courses)

OR

A year’s sequence from:

Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 credits, 3 courses with 3 different prefixes)

Personal Wellness (2 credits)

15 credits from each of three emphasis areas (45 credits)

Allied Health, Business, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Science, Science, Engineering and Mathematics, Technology, and Wellness.

Capstone Course (3 credits)

Electives (31* credits)

 *Some courses may count in both general education and emphasis, total electives needed will vary.

Total: 120 credits**

** 32 credits must be at the upper-level.

-Minors may be added, but courses used in emphasis area may not also be used for minor.

-General Studies may not be taken as additional major/program with another degree.
