Blind and Visually Impaired Endorsements

Students who have completed a teacher preparation program that includes initial licensure can add this endorsement. The state issues endorsements in Elementary Blind or Visually Impaired and Secondary Blind or Visually Impaired. All major program preparations require coursework, and depending on your major program preparation, you may need an additional pedagogy PRAXIS exam. Please visit the SD Department of Education website for more information. Coursework offered at NSU to meet the requirements for this endorsement is listed below.

SPED 421 /SPED 521 - Principles of Orientation and Mobility for the Classroom Teacher 3 credits *

SPED 423 /SPED 523 - Foundations of Teaching Students who have Visual Impairments 2 credits *

SPED 424 /SPED 524 - Educational Methods, Materials, and Access Technology for Students who have Visual Impairments 2 credits *

SPED 425 /SPED 525 - Educational Implications of the Anatomy and Function of the Eye 3 credits *

SPED 434 /SPED 534 - Introduction to the Literary UEB Braille Code 2 credits *

SPED 436 /SPED 536 - Introduction to the Nemeth Code/Teaching Reading to the Blind and Visually Impaired 2 credits *

SPED 495 /SPED 795 - Practicum  4 credits*

*Students can take graduate level courses if accepted into the accelerated MSEd Special Education program and have completed 90 credits of the undergraduate program.
