A Braille Educator Permit can be obtained by completing coursework and taking a PRAXIS exam. Please visit the South Dakota Department of Education website for more information on the Braille Educator Permit and guidance on which PRAXIS exam to take.

Braille Education Requirements

Program Requirements

Proficiency in reading Braille and recommendation for certification by the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

ELED 450 - K-8 Reading Methods 3 credits
SPED 423 - Foundations of Teaching Students who have Visual Impairments 2 credits or
SPED 523 - Foundations of Teaching Students who have Visual Impairments 2 credits
SPED 424 - Educational Methods, Materials, and Access Technology for Students who have Visual Impairments 2 credits or
SPED 524 - Educational Methods, Materials, and Access Technology for Students who have Visual Impairments 2 credits
Successful completion of the Braille proficiency test administered through the Braille and Talking Book Library.
